Screen Printing

Meanwhile, back at university I've also been going to workshops in new techniques. I had one on screen printing the other day, which isn't brand new to me as I've been dabbling in it since A level. But i've never had to expose my own screen before which was really good fun. I chose to draw and image about high class fashion, as I am playing around with several ideas, and the uniform of a "yummy mummy" could be a nice angle to try.

The first print I used two screens, one for the outline and one for the patches of colour. The screen didn't work completely as there were patches on the background that didn't completely expose but for a first attempt I was really pleased. The second image is printed onto patches of collage I made. I like this image more because its far more subltle which contrasts with the brasher pink version. But I think they would work for different audiences.

Mall Guides

While we were sneaking around West Quay drawing people I found these leaflets that have a map of the shopping centre, called a Mall Guide. I did some doodling onto it, and recorded all the people I saw what time and what they said. Then I had the idea to draw onto this guide and instead make it a guide of what you should and should not wear whilst shopping using the information I had gathered from my drawings previously.

I'll keep you posted on this one, it's just a first attempt and definately needs some fine tuning.

My Concertina Travel Book

Weirdly I have actually really started to love drawing people sneakily. It's getting abit out of hand, i'm drawing people everywhere! I went home the other day and on the bus ride from the station I drew as many people as I could and wrote bits of conversations down and where we were ect... this gave me the idea of documenting people and what they wear as I make specific journeys. To respond to this when I got back to university I made a concertina book out of the pages and added some colour like I had previously. Laying the images side by side emphasises the journey much better than the sketchbook did however i'd like to add a line or an actually map of the route to emphasis the journey even more.

Piecing Bits Together

I've started adding colour to my drawings using crayon after alot of experimenting.

Also my computer is completely broke. This is very upsetting from a social point of view but is doing wonders for the amount of work i'm getting through.

However without my laptop I can't do any photoshopping so I've gone retro and used a photocopier and scissors and glue to create these two images.

I like how jumbled the images are, as it adds to the crowd feel to the image.

The idea I'm playing with is that everybody has there own uniform which they wear to show their own personality and individuality.

I think I may stay away from digital this project and see where it takes me.

Drawing on Rolls of Paper

I've been told off by my tutor for designing the page to much (if I can be told off for that!)

So i've started using rolls of paper to draw on, it took me so long to track a roll down though!

Drawing Out and About.

Me and Erin have targeted the West Quay shopping centre as a good place to start drawing.I started off quite awkardly and badly and felt really self concious about it, also its really frustrating as people move about alot and walk away when your half way through,  so I tried a new technique where I hardly look at the page at all, and its working out quite well for me.

Our new Brief!

Our new project is called "Uniforms".

"You are asked to produce a body of investigative research into the theme of uniforms. You should produce on site first hand drawings as well as informing your work with secondry resources."

I really hate drawing people and tend to avoid it all costs.. so lets see how this project pans out...
